A fascinating conversation. Go give it a listen if you have the time.
May the Lord lift up Dr Needham to finish the work set before him. Can’t wait for Volumes 6 & 7.

Southern Seminary mourns the passing of Dr. James Parker III, who died Oct. 23 at age 77.
Dr. Parker joined our faculty in 1999 as professor of worldview and culture and spent decades teaching students to defend the Christian faith with competence and conviction. For many years he lived on campus in Foster Hall, where students knew him as a neighbor, a storyteller, and a friend.
“Jim Parker loved ideas, and he taught a generation of students to love ideas,” said President R. Albert Mohler Jr. “He was greatly loved by students.”

Dr. Jim Parker, former @SBTS prof. Graduate of Trinity, Princeton, Basil, and John Hopkins, passed away early this past Saturday morning. Dr. Paker will be missed. He was a genuine treasure. And interestingly enough, I inherited his personal library.

On the latest Everyday Pastor episode, @LigonDuncan asked @JoelBeeke what we can learn from the Puritan Thomas Goodwin.
Don’t miss Dr. Beeke’s answer. One of the most special moments we’ve ever had on the show.

What is being done to Elisabeth Elliott post-mortem is part of a larger trend/movement to revise the biographies of famous Christians to make them gay. It's been attempted with Jonathan and David (they weren't just friends), with Calvin, Theodore Beza, and Machen among others. I've responded to two of these cases. See the next post.
Notice that Stell is described as a historian. This is an appeal to authority. This is one move. The fact that Stell is a historian means little. Historians get things wrong regularly. They make mistakes and sometimes they just misrepresent things.
Another move is to string together otherwise innocent statements or events and to re-contextualize and sexualize them. Ambiguity is key to this type of revisionism. Statements that weren't originally understood to refer to latent homosexual desire are re-interpreted/re-framed to be sexual in nature. Anyone who objects is denounced as naive or a prude.
In the current case the agenda seems rather obvious when Elliott's biographer asks why anyone should care that she allegedly had Lesbian inclinations or affairs? Why? Those of us who read or listened to Elliott know that she's being accused of gross sin and hypocrisy. Unlike her biographer, apparently, we know what God's Word says about male and female homosexuality and we agree with Scripture. These are effectively post-mortem charges that cannot be properly tried.
This is tabloid stuff at best. A professionally run secular newspaper wouldn't run this sort of story. The evidence is less than thin. That CT ran this story at all says much more about them than it does about Elliott.

Ligon Duncan is the rare breed of high level intellectual capacity, robust theological training, seasoned pastoral experience, strong organizational leadership, clear and compelling communication style, and deeply formed Christian character.
What a gift to the church.

Carl Trueman on the dangers of the celebrity pastor.
This is from 10 years ago now, but is still relevant. It may not be as critical of an issue as it was at the height of the YRR movement and the conference circuits, but there still are individuals who command significant influence — most of their sway these days just comes from podcasts, social media, YouTube, and maybe books, as opposed to the conference circuit model from before. And it’s good that men are gifted and influential, but as Trueman points out, there are dangers in that come with that.
Trueman highlights two main issues:
- an aspirational model of ministry that is increasingly nothing like what aspiring ministers are actually going to experience in ministry
- worldly categories of success instead of faithful categories of success
He said he remembers asking students at Westminster Theological Seminary: “Who's been the most influential preacher in your life?”
He said, “Almost never do they actually say, ‘Well, it's the man who preaches at my home church.’”
Lots to chew on from this clip, but it’s an issue that hasn’t gone away.
"A God-centered life does not mean asceticism or a rejection of those aspects of personality which enrich living with warmth and color. True Christianity can enter fully into the normal routine things of life."
— Iain H. Murray
Rare is the leader who exemplifies the right mix of quiet service and convictional leadership as @GrantStandFast does.
Great conversation!
Loved sitting down with one of the living giants of the Reformed faith, George Grant.
I asked him questions about theology, productivity, leadership, and writing. Essentially, “How has he gotten so much done?”
The answers will encourage you.

Last weekend a Ramsey County sheriff deputy showed up at my house because someone reported that my truck was hanging two feet out of my driveway.
Meanwhile, agitators still show up outside our church every Sunday to harass people and do illegal drugs on land ran by the Parks & Rec. The police do nothing. The sheriff department refuses to get involved.
We get the message. And we’re not going anywhere. We rejoice to be blessed of God.

Just an observation from my own background and context. As a pastor who’s been a Christian for almost twenty-five years, I encounter antinomianism probably 10x more than legalism among Christians.
Your experience may be different, but I wish Reformed evangelicals showed as much urgency confronting antinomianism as they do legalism.

A man can have the right theology, the right books, the right enemies, the right views on the family, worship, politics, and every other hot-button issue, and still have very little experimental religion. Very little mortification of sin. Very little fear of God. Very little self-control. What a terrifying thought.
After more than 13 months since John MacArthur went to Heaven, the elders of Grace Community Church announced this morning that Dr. Nathan Busenitz has accepted the call to serve as Senior Pastor of Grace Community Church.
