Yep and his name is Terry Fox
I’ve asked this before but is there any historical event that is like the Opposite of 9/11. Like something so good that happened that it changed the world forever

In today's @nytimes Backstory newsletter, I talk to Amy Chozick about the new Elizabeth Holmes documentary and Holmes's dispute over a quote from Chozick's NYT profile of her. The movie brings up the quote several times as it assesses Holmes's veracity. nytimes.com/2026/10/22/insid…

And increasingly across Cdn bureaucracies at every level.
This issue is right across the federal government....

This is, almost verbatim, what I recently told a group during a presentation I gave is a typical example of what trying to get information out of the government is like.
This is what we’re up against trying to report on the CFB Wainwright tragedy. On October 18, I asked Environment Canada for the original wind-warning bulletins for the region, to make sure I hadn’t missed any and because several had since been archived online. I also asked for the timestamped XML files — or directions on how to access them myself. I wasn’t asking about the fire. I wasn’t asking for anything new. I was trying to retrieve historical weather warnings and records, most of which were already publicly available. This was their response. It took them two full working days to send this.

Canada is the hardest country I’ve worked in to get information or responses from government agencies. And I was in Dubai before this. We have to demand better.

In a democracy, reflexive and pointless bureaucratic secrecy is bad.

This is amazing reporting
Supersized heat waves used to be rare. No longer. A Reuters data-driven examination of global temperatures reveals the emergence of what we call heat storms. They now swarm the planet, upending life around the world. reut.rs/4zBUXtM

Smug fatalism is the one position I can’t stand. When I was a kid, Spain, Portugal, and Greece were ruled by military dictators. Walls with barbed wire cut Berlin and Jerusalem in half. Being gay was illegal in Spain, and interracial marriage was forbidden in Virginia. You can make your own list of the changes you've seen, but the point is that humans have agency, nothing is static, and hope never dies. Onward!

A mass casualty incident at a military base is not a private matter to be settled privately. This is a public emergency requiring clear, present and urgent communications to the public. Again, no one is demanding the names of the dead before families have been notified.
The amount of hot takes I'm seeing from journalists and commentators is absolutely depressing. We will get a briefing at some point today. FFS folks get a grip. Families deserve answers before anyone else. #Wainwright

We have comms! We had comms here. The issue is that the comms people are trained/expected to release the least info possible. And as a glance at my replies will demonstrate, a lot of Canadians are fine with that, even when it doesn't at all conflict with family notification.
Replying to @mattgurney
Isn't a major nation like Canada supposed to have the capacity to do comms and rescue at the same time? Now I'm hearing it was a drone strike and nothing is being said to prove it wasn't.

Either this is true, which would be a terrible sign that the President is not in control of his own Pentagon, or it's false, in which case the President is lying about a crucial national security issue for some reason.
Q: If it wasn't you, then who gave the order for Starlink to go down in Ukraine? TRUMP: I don't know

Nobody becomes a great writer by studying great writing. They become a great writer by writing badly for a long time and slowly getting less bad. The reading helps. It cannot substitute for the volume of bad writing that has to happen first. There's no shortcut through that part.
