Next time you want to complain about your banking / PE job, remember tech sales is the alternative
- Make less than 6 figures
- Cold-calling the entire day
- Little career progression
- Colleagues are not smart or ambitious
- Work and live in a third-tier city
Mediocrity

One big issue with most sales advice is it’s offered after someone sees something work once.
Gets a job in tech -> “here’s how to get a tech sales job”
Hits a quota -> “here’s how to hit your quota every quarter”
Gets promoted -> “follow me to learn how to promote”
Something working once doesn’t mean it will work again - and definitely doesn’t mean it will work for others.
But lots of people are more excited about posting about their success than are motivated to repeat it for quarters/years.

The best ‘sales tactic’ is knowing your product and industry inside out but nobody wants to hear that because it sounds like hard work
The more “sales tactics” you try to implement live on a call, the less authentic you will sound.
And as a result, the more your energy will feel off with your prospect.
That doesn’t make sales tactics bad.. it just means you need to take a step back and re write the narrative to match your style.
Use frameworks & systems as a North Star.
Stop trying to be like others and be yourself.

A Harvard business study analyzed 450,000 salespeople
89% of top performers said they don’t care if they’re liked
86% of bottom performers said they do
Takeaway: Don’t focus on being liked in sales
It’s about their problems not your ego

Strat / Enterprise AE path to $$$$
1: Work your way up the sales ladder at a company for 4+ years
2: Have a good sense of where the market in your niche is going based on what you're seeing
3: Interviews at the top companies / upcoming startups because of your track record

Agreed
I’d add two things:
1: life is not over at 30/35/etc
You don’t have to hit the goals you’ve been fed by media etc
2: recessions come and go. This is the first time tech has downturned in 20 years. Gotta remember the industry is cyclical when good times reemerge

Funny thing is..
The quality of mind a person has actually gives them enough leverage to change the game drastically.
I've met a handful of very smart, very capable broke ppl in the past few yrs. They have tons of more potential + probability to become a huge success compared to an avg "successful" wifi money bandit (obv once/if they put in the work)
Remember - this is not a game of linear growth, you're not a fukken farmer w a green John Deere under you. This is a game of quantum leaps, at times.
I don't care how much money or whatever you have.. but what you think about, learn, explore and exploit all day, and the kinds of Qs you ask might impress me.

The real trick is finding people who you can trade The Glory for in return for getting The Money
They take the fame & attention as compensation
You take the lions share of the $
Many people just want the recognition, don’t care about the $. Especially the case for younger

You don’t build mental strength or character thru weightlifting..
You do it through 13hr work days, the sick parent you look after, being the only sibling carrying the family, heartbreaks, nights in town alone, friend betrayals..
The fuck is 3 sets gonna do?

To add to the hot take here:
Non-technical AEs with weak product knowledge are going to fizzle out.
Sales Engineers with a commercial skillset will take their place and thus the technical AE will be increasingly more common.

This app sucks now because nobody just posts for the fun of it anymore.
Everybody’s trying to hit the home run banger which gets them monetized.

the ultimate sign of confidence and respect in yourself is when you have the ability to find peace when things are crumbling.
whether it’s in business, relationships, or any other area of life - there’s this underlying feeling that says “I’ll be fine.”

posting cool shit used to be the norm here. now it’s just a bunch for 28-40 y.o. dudes engagement baiting each other while they brag about sitting in cold baths while all producing the same brain dead newsletter concept
