One normally prefers not to waste time commenting on what the so-called Russian opposition pronounces. Life is short, and their YouTube monologues are long. But since they have recently discovered a taste for volume (Navalnaya’s @politico manifesto, followed now by her visa-centric lament), since Western politicians remain oddly susceptible to this rhetoric, someone must eventually bore herself and answer this noise. Consider this a public service: Navalnaya’s latest video, protesting the cancellation of multiple-entry visas for Russians, begins with a familiar intellectual acrobatics: she invents a fake motive (“Europe is trying to fight Putin’s regime”) and then heroically disproves her own invention. The EU’s real justification is « security and control » in the face of a country waging war, sabotage, cyberattacks, and terror on European soil is too concrete for her preferred metaphysical drama. It appears she finds bureaucratic reality less compelling than the tragic novel of Russia misunderstood. But let us leave Yulia aside and consider the broader philosophical failure of what calls itself the Russian opposition. Their entire worldview relies on a metaphysical separation between “Russia” and Russian actions. In their cosmology, the Russian state wages war, but Russians remain innocent; imperialism is an atmospheric condition, not a civic choice; Ukraine is destroyed, but Russia’s “European future” remains miraculously intact. It is a moral universe in which history has no consequences and crimes have no authors. And this metaphysics of innocence is precisely why they cannot articulate a credible post-war vision: they cannot imagine a Russia that must lose in order to become human again. This structural refusal to link Russian violence with Russian society is not a political position, it is an evasion. A civilization that cannot identify its own agency cannot reform it either. Meanwhile, in the world of actual matter and events, Ukrainians are killed daily by Russians, not by millions of putins, not by cosmic forces, not by abstractions. A population that overwhelmingly wants victory at any cost does not belong in the footnotes of opposition speeches. Nor does the basic requirement that any “democratic Russia” must restore every occupied Ukrainian territory, confront the atrocities committed in its name, and dismantle the imperial brainstem that produced this war long before Putin. Nothing about that in the @politico article, written by Navalnaya. Yet instead of confronting the reality their country created, the self-styled opposition prefers to confront Europe for inconveniencing Russian leisure mobility. The victims of the war, it seems, are Russians deprived of multiple-entry convenience, while Europe becomes the tyrant for daring to protect itself from a nation currently bombing Europe. If Europe is “pretending” to fight Putin, as Yulia states, one wonders what to call the opposition’s own theatre, all the touring, the grants, the grand speeches about values that somehow never reach the subject of Russian responsibility. Russia is not being “pushed away” by Europe; it is pushing terrorism into Europe. Until those who claim to fight for a different Russia can finally say, without euphemism, that Russians are responsible for Russian violence, their outrage over visa policies will remain not only unserious but morally inverted. And…If there is any pretending to be exposed, it is not happening in Brussels. It is happening in the rhetoric of people who dream of a European Russia on YouTube but cannot yet face the Russia that actually exists.
