I fully believe that this is a real risk and/but even if the polling is systematically missing Rs, a thumb on the scale in the screen isn't going to fix what ails when the issue is a fundamentally unrepresentative sample.
Replying to @NateSilver538
But it's an example of the phenomenon I wrote about yesterday. Pollsters are very aware of missing low on R's in 2016/20/24. They might still be undercompensating. They also might be overcompensating. Either seems about equally likely at this point. natesilver.net/p/my-pet-peev…

It is entirely possible that the sort of republicans who do not answer pollster calls or texts are inherently different than the 1 in 1000 (or whatever) who do. Problem is you can't account for that with weighting or screening.

Ought to pin this until they get back for the lame duck. I'm sure there's a defensible rationale for the latest OSW maneuvers, but even if the lead negotiators give you the benefit of the doubt, it makes their job harder while providing an easy offramp to Ds looking to get to no.
Replying to @LPDonovan
The biggest impediment to getting this done--beyond the perceived incentives, which are surely part of the calculus here--has always been mutual trust and good faith among the negotiators. A stunt like this really puts a strain on the working relationship that got them here.

If you haven't noticed, the new way to instantly delegitimize any policy--no matter how ordinary, ecumenical, or long-sought--is to call it a handout to data centers. See also: permitting reform.

Ensuring the process of building energy infrastructure remains haphazard and sclerotic to own Big Tech.
First instance of a Hill Democrat openly criticizing BAAJA’s data center provisions. Some progressives quietly believe the bill is a handout to Big Tech, despite the bill’s ratepayer protection language.

Ramesh raises an interesting point and the fact that they haven't used it as an opening to go on the offensive points speaks to the immense discomfort with the policy terrain. There just aren't many GOP candidates/campaigns equipped or inclined to engage in a health care fight.

MBD makes a case for a political party as a *political* party--not an ideological one.
Everybody wants a read on whether Donald Trump is dragging the GOP to simple disaster or utter doom in the midterms. But in @nytopinion, I argue that by smashing the grip of any one faction on the GOP, Trump has put the party in position to grow as a baggier, more ideologically-incoherent coalition. nytimes.com/2026/10/19/opini…

This is a parochial enough concern that if you were looking to get to yes it could probably be accommodated. Escalating publicly like this just looks like an effort to kill the bill (with signal boosting from other interests with unrelated beef of their own.)
First in @PunchbowlNews AM: Tribal fight escalates. Opponents to NHPA changes in the permitting bill shared an analysis w/ us intended to rebut claims that BAAJA would enhance tribal consultation. The 106 Strong coalition is planning a rally at the Capitol Nov. 9 when votes start

But don't take my word for it
The National Congress of American Indians is calling for the Senate permitting deal to be killed, due to changes to Section 106 of NHPA. “This bill needs to be killed,” NCAI President Mark Macarro said. “This is one of those extreme existential threats that’s in front of us."

I’m skeptical that disparate treatment will be effective outside of wind under this administration, but appreciate the admission here that these guys’ highest priority is unlawfully targeting oil and gas projects and project certainty generally will constrain them.
Here's the thing: if we're actually going to phase out fossil fuels and halt global heating, we will NEED executive agencies to display a pattern of "disparate treatment" against fossil fuels. BAAJA literally outlaws this.

With Trump's popularity sinking ahead of the midterms, should Republican candidates distance themselves from the president or stick by his side? @amyewalter and Liam Donovan join Ian Bremmer to discuss the difficult choices facing Republicans, and how Democrats are hoping to capitalize on voter frustration over the economy, the Iran war, and corruption. #gzeroworld

Will Democrats take back both the House and Senate in November? The polls suggest a blue wave could be coming, but the Senate map gives Republicans a fighting chance. On the latest GZERO World podcast, Ian Bremmer speaks with Amy Walter and Liam Donovan about the races that could decide control of Congress. Using transportation unions (specifically ones that previously tried to organize your drivers) as cover to advance your intra-competitive power play is crazy work. You either die a disrupter, or live long enough to become the incumbent.
