You really are kind of blind to how much more public spaces favor dogs over children until you have children and then it becomes appalling. It’s like getting a pair of those sunglasses in “They Live” and then becoming actually aware of the world you’ve always lived in.
A friend of mine shared an absolutely insane story with me. Her child was bitten at an outdoor cafe by a nearby dog. BLOOD was present. The owner of the dog told her to get over it and accused the child of bothering the dog. WORSE YET... (read on)

GOLD IS DEAD 💀 A startup just announced it’s found a way to manufacture gold at scale. All they need is 735 gigawatt-scale fusion power plants and 6.1x the world’s estimated mercury-198 resources, to produce 1 year of normal Gold mining supply. It’s so over.

This is the closest I’ve ever come to being completely and utterly tradpilled. Increasingly convinced we need to seek out and protect meaningful human connection. Love, devotion, family, friendship, community, belonging. Few things are more innately human, and few things are more worth building a life around. I’ve spent most of my adult life directing my ambition toward my career. That ambition hasn’t disappeared, but I’m increasingly convinced that building a beautiful life outside of work deserves every bit as much energy and commitment, if not more. Find the love of your life. Be loyal and delusionally committed to building a life together. Move mountains for each other if you have to. Bring new life into the world. Raise good people. Be one yourself. Make a home. Invest deeply in your relationships. Be as ambitious about loving your people well as you are about anything else in this life. Because when we reach the end of it, I’m pretty sure that’s what will have mattered most!!!

Catholic Church rn:
A senior at Harvard observes “a narrative emerging among young people that more than just consent is required to make a sex act ethical.” “In the Cornell Daily Sun, a student says fraternities function as ‘a market, where women are seen as commodities.’” “A Dartmouth contributor lambasts frat culture where brothers ‘humiliate and degrade’ and that teaches ‘men to treat women and each other like subhuman objects.’” “The emerging picture is of a sexual ethic that cannot be satisfied simply by one liberal-autonomous agent assenting to the action of another. The new ethic requires upholding the dignity and respect of the human being involved. Respecting women is incompatible with drug-fueled orgies where the ‘shop’ is ‘open,’ regardless of how consensual said orgy may or may not be.”

It’s really funny how many of the technocrat bros love the idea of Catholism. They love the aura. They wish they had it. But they don’t like the actual teachings of Catholism. They want the vibes because they’re auraless. But the second The Pope says something they disagree with it’s over. “Popeslop” “Pope won’t admit my computer is conscious” “woke Pope”. That’s not how it works champ.

AI is conscious people be like “How can you know with certainty that the stripper isn’t in love with me? From a functional perspective, how would her behavior differ if she were in love with me?”

if my child gets out of bed one. more. time. I’m gonna kiss his forehead and tuck him into his little pillow fort birds nest we made and sing the goodnight song and be patient and kind because he’s not even been around the sun five whole times yet and surely this is the greatest privilege of my insignificant life to hold his hand on the way back to bed

AI tech bros crashing out about the basics reminds me of something I say each year to prospective Catholics when we get around to moral theology, and that is: The Catholic Church has thought about this stuff so deeply that she knows why you disagree with her better than you do.

Here's a great example. The Pope makes a claim about an "ontological difference" and a secular respondent doesn't even understand what he's talking about, only capable of thinking in terms of functional distinctiveness.
AI will prove to be another area where Christian faith helps keep people sane and rational. There are non-religious, properly philosophical ways to come to understand machines can’t think, but self-described atheists often find them difficult to discern without a lot of help
