These three teachers’ stories show the difference between listening to someone and trying to persuade them.
When a teacher says, “I don’t want to belong to the union,” the response shouldn’t be a list of everything the union has done for them—designed to guilt trip them into saying.

“I’ll leave the opponents with the words of Governor Hochul, who said that she engaged directly with New York state business leaders, who have committed to using this tax credit to support public school students and their academic needs, and so she is convinced,” said Ashling Preston, director of federal affairs at the American Federation of Children (@SchoolChoiceNow).
“Again, this is somebody who supports public schools, who supports public school students. We recognize that the majority of children in this country are educated in our nation’s public schools, and there are a multitude of ways that those children are going to be able to benefit,” she added.

Also note that LAUSD is spending more on employees, but these additional dollars are increasingly spent outside the classroom.
Between 2013 and 2023, inflation-adjusted expenditure on employee compensation grew by about $1.7 billion or 27% (despite losing 35% of their students).
Total dollars going to teachers rose by $85.4 million, as their share of employee compensation fell from 52% to 42%.
The problem isn't just that LAUSD is spending more than they take in, its priorities are also out of whack.

"Enrollment declined from 440,365 to 369,830 students, a decrease of about 16%. Over the same period, the total of 'full-time-equivalent' jobs increased from 60,344 to 64,148, or about 6.3%"

State leaders have the power to decide far more than budgets and school funding.
They shape what students learn, what parents are told, and who can compete in school sports.

Starting next year, a $1,700 donation to a scholarship fund could mean every dollar comes back through a federal tax credit. The catch? It only benefits students if their state opts in. As of now, 31 states have opted in, including New York, which just signed on. I’m heading to DC later this week to learn how this will work in practice and what it could mean for students and families. Looking forward to the conversations ahead.
