Sorry, but Nimbyism is actually very popular across the country. It's much, much more than 10,000 of us objecting to stuff being built. We can accept it, we can condemm it but we can't deny it.

the entire country could be Canary wharf but there's about 10k brits who stops all of it over the smallest littlest bitty thing. I really just think 1 government should say fuck it all and just build everything. Fuck "perception" just build all of the things we need now

Note to the EU haters. You can hate it. Many do. But it is still the UK's neighbours being in a club that the UK has to deal with from a point of weakness. Geography denial has failed, obviously. So far the only serious idea I've seen is "muddle through". Is that it?
UK offering Freedom of Movement would be the game changer for conversations with the EU, one of the trio of people, pounds and positivity I identified earlier this year as crucial to any significant move to removing barriers. thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

Lord Macaulay. The man who gave us the "Whig" interpretation of history and his (highly partisan) History of England!
#OTD 1800 1/3 - Birth of Thomas Babbington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay, poet, historian and Whig MP for Calne 1830-32, Leeds 1832-34 and Edinburgh 1839-47 & 1852-56. A key figure in early 19th century literature and politics,

The 2016 referendum asked whether Britain should leave the EU. It didn't ask whether we should leave the Single Market, Customs Union or end Freedom of Movement. Those were subsequent political choices. Why do we keep pretending they were all on the ballot paper?

One strange thing from Sheffield Beer Festival this week has been having someone recognise me from Norwich Beer Festival in 2010!

It seems inevitable at this point that we will be getting more and more politicians with tattoos before too long. Not to mention politicians with lots and lots of tattoos!
Burnham gets a flu jab at age 56 and shows a strange tattoo. You are eligible for a free NHS flu jab at 65 years or older, so one imagines he paid for his in Manchester today.

Fed up with my compulsive stealing, my family sent me on the Jeremy Kyle show. I took a lie detector test. Got £50 for it at Cash Converters!

At what point does the Culture Secretary and the rest of her department decide that enough is enough and intervene to save the BBC from itself?
NEW: BBC will no longer have a dedicated education editor as part of proposal that will see 100 jobs go across BBC News. School leaders call the plan “deeply regrettable” and ask for a rethink. Education/Social affairs editor jobs being combined. theguardian.com/media/2026/o…

Just read a report about the way people walk when they're drunk. It's staggering.

I've always thought that Francis Fukuyama was a tad overrated. But then he comes out with a hot take so completely divorced from reality that overrated doesn't even begin to cover it!
Francis Fukuyama: "The lack of a strong national musical tradition contributes to the weakness of American national identity."

There are many things to disapprove of in modern rugby. Lack of defence, teams not getting promoted to Premiership, anything related to the Welsh RFU. Replacements celebrating with try scorers is not one of those things!
🗣️ "It is total bluster, unnecessary bravado and it just needs to stop. It is classless, too, unlike the try-scorers of yesteryear who offered dignity and respect" @CharlesRTel says it will end in someone getting hurt unless referees start to intervene ⤵️ telegraph.co.uk/rugby-union/…

Infinitely preferable to the modern, bland and frankly unappealing book covers that dominate the shelves at Waterstones at present!
Bring back traditional science fiction book covers say I! You know the ones, proper 'marmalade droppers'...

Lots of people make being working class out to be something it really isn't. Namely an excuse for petty bigotry. And using class politics as an alibi for this sort of bad behaviour does an enormous amount to hold working class people back from making the most of their lives!
Posh-boy millionaire Nigel Farage’s latest excuse is that most working-class men are racist and misogynistic, sniff women’s chairs, would sexually assault female colleagues and make disgusting remarks about their own daughters, such as: “Fuck me, if she was my daughter, it would still be bath night on a Thursday. I’ll wash you properly this time.” The white working-class friends I grew up with, from primary and secondary school to college and university, are not nonces or bigots. Farage doesn’t get to smear an entire class of people to excuse the disgusting behaviour of Reform councillors and activists.

Not only do I think that "Trumpism" will live on after he's gone, but also that American Republicans will manage to find somebody even worse as their next figurehead! ☹️
How stupid do you have to be to think the Reaganites achieved "nothing," esow ually in comparison to Trump? They more or less governed for 20 years in a 28 year period, Trumpism is dead before his 2nd terms end

The Lib Dem policy of replacing Council Tax with a local income tax from back in 2005 was a fundamentally good idea!
What are some of the best manifesto policies that never came to fruition?

Nigel, this is an astonishing misunderstanding of British history. For 500 years, from Henry VIII and Elizabeth I through Marlborough, Pitt, Palmerston and Churchill, Britain's grand strategy was to prevent any single power dominating Europe. We did so through alliances, diplomacy, intervention and, when necessary, war. We fought Spain, Louis XIV, Napoleon and Hitler not to withdraw from Europe, but to shape its balance of power. The EU was the modern, peaceful expression of that strategy. Instead of balancing France and Germany from outside, Britain sat alongside them, exercising power from within. We were one of Europe's three great political powers. Brexit voluntarily surrendered that influence while leaving us exposed to European decisions. You appear to think British foreign policy was about keeping foreigners out. It was actually about keeping Britain powerful. That's the difference between understanding 500 years of statecraft and mistaking the English Channel for a foreign policy.
Replying to @eurorealist
How ban Brexit have destroy 500 years of foreign policy? The EU isn’t 500 years old. Britain has gad to fight for independence from European powers and treason at home for centuries. Joining the EU was an aberration and was only supposed to be free trade.
