Actual socialism is fighting for locally owned grocery stores etc (which ime are usually on par with Lidl in terms of pricing but ymmv) and publically owned transport systems to allow ease of access. Socialism doesn’t have to give into corporations just bc it’s convenient.

The end of WW2. It must’ve been so incredible to the people living at the time
I’ve asked this before but is there any historical event that is like the Opposite of 9/11. Like something so good that happened that it changed the world forever

I'd imagine there are few dates where you can find seas of people from cities across the globe all celebrating the exact same thing

France’s 35-hour workweek didn’t generate work-sharing: absent tax cuts, employment would have fallen 3.8%, concentrated among lower-skill workers. TFP rose 2%, output fell 1%, from @PaulineCarry, @cmontialoux, @ElioNimier, Alexandra Roulet, and @ninaroussille nber.org/papers/w35917

It's out! You can now read The Bad Economics Handbook. Read my explanations of things people have stupid ideas about, repost my graphs on this website for dunks....or comment if you see a mistake. jackonomics.substack.com/p/t… badeconomicshandbook.com
I have written 25,000+ words so far explaining these things in a "Handbook of Bad Economics." Problems: - General lack of macro knowledge (need to talk about MMT, national debt, do tax cuts pay for themselves) - Need more articles from major public figures to begin chapters with

Do supply constraints explain housing quantity & price growth across cities? New piece claims that once you population-weight the estimates (i.e. more weight on big cities) & code the measures as continuous variables (rather than categorical), supply constraints clearly matter.

University of Chicago Students to Protest at Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Demand End to Federal Ban on Onion Futures Student-led group For Our Futures will rally Monday morning to call for repeal of the 1958 Onion Futures Act On Monday, October 19, at 8:30 a.m., members of For Our Futures, a student-led organization from @UChicago, will gather outside the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (@CMEGroup) headquarters to demand the repeal of the Onion Futures Act of 1958, a nearly 70-year-old federal law prohibiting futures trading in onions. The Onion Futures Act, enacted following allegations of market manipulation in the 1950s, singled out onions for a prohibition on futures contracts that remains in effect today. For Our Futures is calling on Congress to repeal the ban and restore the ability of onion growers, buyers, and traders to participate in a regulated futures market. Onions remain the only commodity banned from futures trading in the United States. The protest will feature a giant inflatable onion costume, protest signs, and dozens of students, and will take place outside the headquarters of CME Group, one of the world's largest derivatives marketplaces and the historic center of American onion futures trading. log(Starbucks + 1)
Coffee shops boost innovation. 10% more Starbucks in an area --> 3-4% more inventions. People gather over a cuppa. They share ideas, discuss how to untangle a knotty problem, help see an issue from another perspective. These conversations lead to breakthroughs and inventions. A very fun paper finds that when Starbucks rolled out to a new county, it fueled a coffee-shop culture, urging more and more people to “grab a coffee” together. The authors compare the counties where Starbucks had rolled out to those where it had not yet arrived. And they find that the number of patents in caffeinated counties is meaningfully higher. This paper underscores how essential the face-to-face encounter is. Starbucks isn’t that old. People Could have picked up the phone and chatted at any time. People Could have dropped an email. Probably they did. But those connections didn’t yield the same insights and creativity. Turns out that a Cup of Joe really does help the knowledge flow. We talk about how much in-person connection boosts creativity in In Person. It’s out in just few days, so now is a great time to pre-order. Good! Federal loans being available to scam schools and majors is why we have the student debt crisis.
Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/NmmAzhf
