Public spending in Canada by age.
When Ottawa looks for savings, it reviews the public service and operations. Most of that isn't on this chart.
The elephant in the room is the bulge after 65: health care (red) and OAS/GIS (blue).
Reminder that Canada under the Harper government *did* raise the OAS eligibility age.
Had Trudeau not reversed this courageous reform, we would be spending $11 billion less on OAS by 2029, according to the PBO.
When OAS was created in 1952, the benefit began at age 70. Life expectancy was 68, and the ratio of workers to retirees was 8 to 1.
Eligibility is now at 65, with life expectancy at 81, and the ratio of workers to retirees down to 3 to 1.
The current system represents a massive, unjust intergenerational transfer of wealth which is obviously unsustainable.

Replying to @_AndrewRN @CoopTory
For any serious OAS reform to pass through parliament, consensus would have to be reached by at least the LPC and CPC. This sort of thing should be spearheaded by both government and opposition MPs. At a minimum, we ought to be looking at the clawback thresholds.

“The reality is that Trudeau set a baseline for what this country could deliver in services that was unsustainable given the level of growth he could create. The best way to underpin the Trudeau legacy is the growth to sustain it and to build upon it. And that’s what Carney did”

Forecast 2025-26 deficit prior to this week’s Budget
PBO: $67.7B
Scotia: $66.9B
RBC: $65.2B
Desjardins: mostly echo PBO
Actual: $39.3B

Canada’s 2025–26 financial results came in stronger than projected.
The $39.3B deficit was $27.5B lower than forecasted, supported by higher revenues and lower-than-expected program expenses.

Here’s a real conversation I had with a woman in an elevator today.
Woman: “Excuse me, what’s the red flower for? Why is everyone wearing them?”
Me: “Are you visiting Canada or do you live here?”
Woman: “I live here.”
Me: “Where are you from?”
Woman: “Kuwait. What’s the flower for?”
Me: “Google it.”

"Rome .. complete lack of proper coffeeshops with good coffee"
😂🤣
Italy is basically a third world country with a failing economy, aging population and crazy taxes
Rome is all this multiplied by terrible accommodations, overtourism, and complete lack of proper coffeeshops with good coffee, wifi and laptop places (ironic given Italy was one of the pioneers of coffee in Europe)
but man the amount of culture and history is so insane here i would move to this city in a blink of an eye
and i don’t even mention the amazing food (although probably too much carbs), friendly and open people (complete opposite of Switzerland/Germany), beautiful language and amazing climate (i’m wearing a shirt in November!)
Italy has such a crazy cultural capital, so sad the italian government is not using and abusing it to attract expats and businesses
i am convinced a proper nomad visa program + lower taxes and social contributions for expats would bring its economy to the top of europe in a couple of years

That OAS number is insane.
While most developed nations have raised, or plan to raise, the retirement age, Canada leaves it at 65 for purely political reasons.

The spending on OAS - aka wealthy boomers is TRIPLE the Canada Child Benefit
MAKE IT MAKE SENSE
Andrew 🇨🇦 retweeted
My growing radical proposal is we kill OAS entirely. The full program gone. In return we double GIS (~$11,000 extra per recipient). This would give genuinely poor seniors $2000 extra dollars per year AND save something like $50-60 billion dollars.
I would then recycle some of this money in 3 ways:
1) increase CCB clawback thresholds from 38/83 to 45/90
2) cut PIT rates (specific numbers require a more detailed plan)
3) modestly increase defence spending
Then we keep 1/2 the savings to reduce the deficit.

LMFAO are people seriously advocating that we cut the CCB instead of OAS?
Are we doing that right now?
Andrew 🇨🇦 retweeted
We spend an insane amount of money on OAS, sending welfare cheques to retired millionaires. We could cut OAS, boost GIS to seniors actually experiencing poverty, and still save tens of billions of dollars.
