In China, tunnel boring machines are known as the “king of engineering machinery” 工程机械之王.
This particular Chinese TBM is digging a 16 km undersea high-speed rail tunnel. It can be remotely operated and its blades need to be replaced every meter.
Now China is trying to make increasingly “intelligent” TBMs full of sensors that can operate autonomously.
China went from relying on TBM imports to producing 2/3 of the world’s TBMs.
Genuinely fascinating article despite it being a Global Times article.
China’s domestically built super-large-diameter shield machine “Yongzhou” is chewing through the world’s longest undersea high-speed rail tunnel — advancing toward the deepest point, roughly 80 meters beneath the seabed. Next year it will meet its twin under the sea in a first-of-its-kind operation in #China. Here’s how the “steel giant” is navigating complex undersea geology. #ChinaNeoMake

Note that they don't really step on the gas until half way through this video. I say that because you're going to spend the first minute saying, "yeah, that's pretty fast" and then they step on it and it becomes terrifying
