Replacing a Honeywell VisionPRO IAQ with an ecobee isn’t a normal thermostat swap. The hidden EIM changes everything. I documented the wiring, configuration, testing, and setup: absent.org/replace-honeywell…
Inspired by @DanielLockyer, today I chose violence. I let @ChatGPT walk me through replacing a proprietary Honeywell thermostat system with an @Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced that I got for free from @nwnatural That meant: • bypassing the Honeywell EIM 💀 • rewiring the furnace control board • reconnecting the outdoor condenser • testing every stage (heat, A/C, fan) I labeled everything and double-checked every step before making changes, but ChatGPT never led me astray. The actual wiring and installation process took 20 minutes. The system is now fully operational. 💪 I’ve been wanting to do this for YEARS. Today, AI made a project that felt well beyond my comfort zone approachable. AMA. Photos below. I did a temp job with some butt connectors, but have some proper Wago 221 connectors arriving Wednesday.

Way cool, but it kills me that none of these libraries seems to have a good network topology (star?) algorithm for wide area networks.
This is Pele, my new rendering library for diagrams and charts, compatible with the latest Mermaid syntax. - 100-500× faster than mermaid.js - 6× smaller bundle - No dependencies - Easy to theme - Responsive to device width In pursuit of making Obsidian insanely fast and cohesively designed, I always found the Mermaid library to be too big, too slow, and too hard to theme. Pele will be the new renderer in the next version of Obsidian, but you can start using it now. Pele [ˈpɛlɛ] is named after the goddess of volcanoes and fire. It's open source under the MIT license. Try the playground!

And yeah, I know it's an active feature request in Mermaid. And I know the architecture type exists. Not the same.

New: I got a tip a little while ago about a shadowy Pentagon entity called "TSO" with a lot of money and a desire for offensive hacking tools. Turns out TSO is a new DoD agency. And it does a lot more than hacking. w/@JackDetsch and @paulmcleary politico.com/news/2026/10/22…

The GRU hacked into Jared Kushner's iPhone. Dutch military intelligence (MIVD) then recruited a GRU spy who gave them access to the hacked phone. What MIVD discovered was that Kushner had access to two bank accounts --one Azerbaijani, the other Israeli --where Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Emirati ruler Mohammed bin Zayed deposited money. It sounds like a slightly far-fetched episode of "Slow Horses," but it's real. And it proves just how eye-poppingly corrupt this administration was and continues to be as its "special envoy" decides the fate of tens of millions in Europe in the Middle East. Simply incredible reporting by Matthew Cole, drawn from his new book on Kushner. vanityfair.com/story/jared-k…

I’m seriously considering forking iTerm2 just so I can change it from “Split Horizontally” to something that I can actually remember, such as “Split Down” like Ghostty.

I have a lot of feelings on this, but I’ll just say that resilience and adaptability are important things to develop. But they don’t really teach those in school and not everyone wants to enlist in the military where they do. My heart hurts for the people in this spot.
This hacker news thread is absolutely heart-breaking. Whoever thinks “humans will find a way” ought I read it.

A missed opportunity for Apple's Homeview was to make a kit option where it was able to replace a smart thermostat in the first place. 24 VAC ought to be enough. And I suppose they could still pivot to this with the right software and hardware kit.
Apple HomeView looks great! Finally a replacement for my previous solution “kids broken ipad”

TFW when you agentically code a solid piece of software to replace an existing subscription and it ends up evolving into something else, and now you use the software AND keep the existing subscription. And you're somehow okay with that.

I’m either losing my mind or the coding models from OpenAI and Anthropic are getting noticeably worse. It started happening by some of the time and now it’s nearly all the time. The agents will just run off on complete tangents despite clear instructions. Then, when you call them out, they’ll apologize and may or may not do the right thing from there. It’s starting to feel like human programmers have a safe future.
