St. Pancras has fallen.
Email from the British Library. "Next year we’ll also begin work on repurposing our Science and Social Sciences Reading Rooms to become a flexible workspace and generate a new revenue stream." I'm sorry, what?

It isn't 'left wing' to destroy the public realm. These aren't just 'old buildings'. They belong to the whole community, often built through their collective resources and certainly maintained by them. Socialism, at least my tradition, is in part about conserving and strengthening the public realm for the common good. It is not about destruction. It shows appreciation for civic beauty and pride, a sense of history, connection with those before us, duty for those after us, the importance of place and belonging. The things that make life worth living, being available as widely as possible. Individualists destroy. Selfish utilitarians have no concern for such things. Anarchy breeds inequality, as those with means will shut themselves away and the rest are left to suffer.
Reactionaries more concerned with old buildings on fire than the disintegration of the social order under their beloved neoliberalism.

It doesn’t matter how aggressive Russia is towards us, chemical & radiological terrorist attacks on our streets, attempted assassination attempts on our Prime Minister, full-scale invasion of Europe - Putin’s far-left UK bootlickers like Schneider will always demand surrender.

Request: If you see or hear MCFC current / former employees (especially players and managers) giving pro-City views on the "115" case, pls tweet me examples / links as I research whether they have paid deals with City to do so, for example as paid ambassadors for the club. Thanks

I hope the images of Zohran Mamdani having people who claim to be pro-Palestine screaming at him in public and calling him a traitor for attending an October 7th vigil will finally wake people up to what I have been warning about for years.

I’m sorry to say the BBC is committing multiple acts of self-harm. Current senior management do not seem to understand that in the changing media landscape the BBC should still be providing content the commercial sector is unwilling or unable to invest in.

Very rare (first time?) incidence of Robinson being right.
It's incredibly important to aggressively resist the idea that AI can be conscious or have "personhood," not only because it's as ridiculous as believing that a book can think, but because once this is accepted, "AI's interests" will very quickly be prioritized over humanity.

Note well, apparently Anthropic tried very hard to get the Vatican to alter the text of "Magnifica Humanitas" just prior to its release so that it would not deny AI personhood.

This is a poor take that suggests he doesn't know much about Russia in the 1990s, including Russia-US or wider Russia-West relations in the 1990s. By giving only one part of the story, he is repeating the Russian political elite's line that it was all the West's fault. Long🧵

Trite, conspiratorial and cynical hack work. Zero expertise or curiosity of the region, just crowbarring another West Bad angle into a money-for-old-rope book.
The West helped create Vladimir Putin. A senior Western diplomat warned in 1994 where capitalist 'shock therapy' would take Russia. They ignored him - and ended his diplomatic career.

Appalling of Laura Snape to not mention Macklemore’s history of overt antisemitism. Whatever the reason Sheeran kicked him from the tour, the undeniable antisemitism is clearly relevant.

Literary culture belongs to (good) readers.
Professors have their own culture, academic culture. Literary culture belongs to writers.

Just occurred to me that there should be a new Partridge when Coogan retires.
The JAMES BOND shortlist is here, with six actors reportedly set to screen-test in September to play the next 007 (via @PageSix) Jack Barton, Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal, Callum Turner, Jack Lowden and Harris Dickinson tinyurl.com/4tbu69rk

Bee escapes bonnet: there's a dismaying trend in criticism now—armchair sociology, favoring button-pushing how-"we"-live-now movies like The Drama and The Invite, and ignoring aesthetics; it reflects a writerly-editorial preference for culture, i.e., not art but the arts as news—

Excellent thread.
🧵It's worth saying that some of what went on in the Arday case has to do with the completely insane way that hiring operates in British universities. As someone who recently went through a couple of years of applying for jobs, I have some expertise in what goes wrong: The first

What people continuously miss is that if you are not capable of expressing something yourself, then you actually do not have something to say. You just think you do.
Even proponents of AI are quick to say they don’t let the AI write actual text. Why? I see nothing wrong with a writer with something to say getting assistance crafting the language to express it.

A major nuclear power has been threatening Britain for years. It has invaded our ally, conducted assassinations on our soil using CBRN weapons & is preparing for a long term confrontation with Britain. Listening to Simon Fletcher on defence would be an act of gross negligence.
The choices and conflicts caused by rearmament are an unavoidable reality of the current period. The Left must organise its actions, priorities and programme so that opposition to rising military spending and warmongering are central. For @tribunemagazine tribunemag.co.uk/2026/07/aga…

The Corbynites are happy. 800,000 Syrians were murdered by the Assad regime and 10 million displaced from that moment forwards, and they are still celebrating it like they won a football match. They're still uncovering new mass graves in Syria 18 months after the fall.
