This is such a bleak story about what it's like to try to land a job right now. nytimes.com/interactive/2026…

Seems very, very believable to me
Why are hotels so expensive? A new lawsuit alleges that travel website Expedia is rigging the entire market, exploiting its leverage over 80% of all online bookings to inflate hotel prices in every booking channel by 15-30%.
It's an economy-wide price fixing scheme, not unlike what Amazon does to retail. /
Absolute tragedy. Annette was the godmother of British New York freelancers, one of the most generous, talented and hard working journalists I've known. From when she retired in 2018: pressgazette.co.uk/news/flee…
I only met Annette Witheridge once, but we exchanged many an email. This tenacious and terrific lady got 'that photo' of Jeffrey Epstein and the then Prince Andrew in Central Park and wrote the story that changed the entire course of history. I am very sad to hear of this amazing lady departing; she'll be quaffing the finest of wines in the skies. #AnnetteWitheridge #PrinceAndrew #AndrewMountbattenWindsor #JeffreyEpstein #Journalism #CrusadingColumnist #SimplyTheBest #MuchMissed

hey for no reason whatsoever just sharing this little tidbit about the last time McClatchy did layoffs
journalism is not really dying. it's being stripped for parts by people who have never cared about it miaminewtimes.com/news/mccla…
Awful
Allison's team was a newish effort by the Miami Herald to cover local communities in Broward County, the second most populous in Florida. It's hard to square laying off local reporters with McClatchy (Chatham's) goal of "reporting rooted in our communities and strengthened by sources."
You can't cover communities or gain the trust of sources without reporters covering those communities and the people who live there. You can't gain subscribers if you aren't providing real news about their schools, their budgets, their governments. And you can't cover them with artificial intelligence or regurgitated information.
The reality is the company has backed away from covering local news for at least a decade. Rebuilding those relationships with readers takes time. Now we are pulling away once again from our most important mission when readers need it the most.
None of this makes any sense. I do not know how you have a newspaper without original content and stories that impact local readers at a granular level.
The only bright side is that our investigative team remains intact for now. We will continue to dig, and break stories because our staff is relentlessly dedicated to our work, and to the readers who have supported us for the past 123 years.
Allison is a gifted journalist. I hope that another newspaper or media company who recognizes how important her work is scoops her up.
Hard pivot from the NYT article on a female angler
Somebody, somewhere in NYC for whatever reason recorded the New York 1 morning news broadcast on Sept. 11, 2001.
They wound up recording history. It starts at 8:30 a.m. ET.
You get 15 minutes of news from the Before Times.
Then the world changes.

written about this extensively so often, but here it goes again
Every country has that one city (at least) with that one neighborhood (wealthy) which is their version of the global good life, and if you stick to it, and many tourist do, all you get from your travel is the local variation on a comfortable setting.
To see something truly different all you have to do is go a little ways away, sometimes only a handful of blocks, but usually a few miles away, or even a different city.
It isn't hard at all to get more out of travel, but honestly, that's not what most people want -- they want to be in the same play, with basically the same actors, that won't challenge them, but with a slight change of scenery.
Nothing wrong with that necessarily, just don't pretend getting far more out of travel isn't really easy.
modern travel is increasingly flying 10 hours to experience a slightly different version of the same globally optimized lifestyle.
same third wave coffee. same natural wine bar. same brutalist menu. same sourdough. same beige hotel. same tasteful ceramics. same instagram lighting.
what a ridiculous convergence.
