Imagine being in your first week of social work training and being told that some of your fellow students might be there to gain access to vulnerable children.
Shocking, right? But this social worker’s point applies anywhere adults work with children. Some people will seek out those roles for the wrong reasons. And the person whose behaviour you need to question might be the nicest person you know.
She also makes an important point about why safeguarding starts with having a clear sense of what’s normal and what isn’t. Once that boundary starts to blur, it’s easier for someone to cross it without being challenged.
I wish I’d seen this video years ago. I can think of times when something felt off and I kept quiet because I worried I might be wrong or cause offence.
Thanks @JournalistJill for highlighting it.

As the world emerges from the chaos wrought by the trans movement, the monstrous incongruity between what well-meaning people thought they were supporting and the reality of what has occurred is becoming clear.
Every day, more people wake up to the fact that trans rights was never an ordinary civil rights cause. It was never about equal rights or an end to the discrimination of a long-marginalized group.
It was a total rewrite of reality—a movement intent on bending the world around the false belief held by a tiny number of people who didn’t recognise themselves as mentally ill.
What was sold as medically necessary, life-saving care has turned out to be an atrocious medical crime committed by true believers blind to the brutality of the procedures they perform.
And what the unsuspecting masses thought was a progressive quest for equal rights has instead resulted in the obliteration of women’s rights, the suppression of scientific scrutiny, the erosion of free speech, and the dismantling of child safeguarding.

Ebert knows nothing. He's revealing the chasm between the neurotypical and the neurodivergent.
Yes, fandom is a socialization vehicle for the socially inept.
AND
Fanbois genuinely adore the fictional worlds in those franchises.
Notice how he sees social ineptitude as a character flaw worthy of contempt rather than as a neurological disability worthy of compassion.
Notice also how he can't stand conversations with Aspies, finding them a crashing bore, again faulting them for being defective rather than just different.
Ebert knows what reaction ASDs provoke in him, but he doesn't actually understand them at all.
Those who camp out on sidewalks are OBSESSED with the movies they are waiting for AND they get a huge endorphin hit from going all-out for the object of their obsession.
It's fine that Ebert isn't an Aspie and that he doesn't have Aspie obsessions — but he would be well-served to understand what's going on with people who are wired differently. Instead, he sneers at them for being low-status, which reveals more about him than about the objects of his contempt.

Americans, this means you: I'm begging you, STOP using ‘gender’ as a synonym for sex.
When you mean sex use the word sex.

On November 7th, 1917, the Bolsheviks seized power Russia, promising “peace, land and bread” to the people. Over the next 74 years the people were starved, killed by death squads, thrown in work camps and gulags, and other things unrelated to “peace, land and bread”.

No, I don't think we've been clear on that at all.
I'm clear on the "I won't tolerate scams and fraud" platform.
I'm clear on the "You will not import caste discriminatory bullshit into my country" platform.
I'm clear on the "You will not pollute our lakes and rivers, whether for religious reasons or because you're used to throwing trash on the ground" platform.
I'm clear on the "You will piss and shit in toilets, not the forest" platform.
I'm clear on the "You don't get to demand that Americans accommodate practices that violate our laws or fundamental principles" platform.
And I'm perfectly comfortable criticizing cultural traditions I consider harmful, backward, or incompatible with American values.
But a "no Indians" platform? Absolutely not. That's where you lose me.
I don't give a damn about someone's ancestry. I care about their conduct, their values, and their willingness to respect the country they've chosen to make their home.
If someone comes here, embraces American civic values, respects our laws, treats their neighbors as equals, and contributes to our society, why on Earth would I reject them for being Indian?
Conversely, if someone comes here and practices caste discrimination, commits fraud, hates Americans and discriminates agaisnt them for hiring, or insists that their traditions exempt them from the standards everyone else must follow, I'm going to have a problem with that.
I'd have exactly the same problem with an American-born citizen doing those things. Or any other immigrant group.
My objection is to behavior and particular cultural practices, not bloodlines.
I refuse to pretend every cultural practice is equally admirable. Some deserve criticism. Some deserve rejection. Many have absolutely no place in American society.
An individual's ethnicity tells me nothing about whether that person embraces those practices. If your position is that certain behaviors are unacceptable, we have something to discuss.
If your position is that people are unacceptable simply because they're Indian, then we have a fundamental disagreement.
I believe in judging people by what they do and what they stand for, not what their ancestors looked like.
That's a distinction I'm not willing to surrender.
Fake, for so many reasons.

You can't tap-to-pay with just a chip.
The chip has to be connected to an antenna sandwiched in the card for NFC transmission.
A chip alone has to be inserted in a chip reader. Might even get a tiny electric charge to activate it.
He destroyed his credit card for this one reason… 🤯💳
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Cartão de crédito não funciona apenas com o chip. Ao cortar sua estrutura plástica, conexões internas podem ser danificadas, comprometendo a comunicação com as máquinas de pagamento. Portanto, retirar o chip não garante seu funcionamento.

Dr. Strange returns.
So so so so so so happy to have mom and dad (@Tammy1Peterson and @jordanbpeterson) at our Halloween party (movie character themed!) Couldn’t think of an outfit more appropriate than Dr. Strange. (Mom’s Edna from The Incredibles. I was Elle Woods from Legally Blonde). Thanks to everyone who came out :)

NAME. THE. HARM.
What harm happens automatically when I enter a women’s washroom or changing room?
One fucking word, Joanne. You’re an author. Surely you can find a noun.
“Men” names your classification. “Sex-based rights” names your claim. Neither identifies what I’ve actually done to anyone by walking through a door.
You’ve written entire imaginary worlds. Describe the real-world harm you’re demanding I be excluded to prevent.

Trans women in women's sports is a top tier issue for humanity because it's a proxy for the following questions:
-- Are we liberal society? (Or are we a progressive authoritarian society?)
-- Are we a pluralistic society? (Or are we social justice theocracy?)
-- Are we a democratic society? (Or are we governed by the unrepresentative consensus of a tiny, delusional elite?)
-- Are we a reason-based society? (Or are we a cargo cult that worships idols?)
-- Are we a reality-based society? (Or do we treat falsehoods as truths when told by people in power that it is virtuous to do so?)
-- Can we put a stop to obvious insanity? (Or are we in the thrall of ridiculous dogmas that no one can dispute because a powerful lobby calls it virtuous to clap along to absurdities and cruelties that destroy fairness?)

That a Nobel mooted institute director in a hard science field could be framed by a seeming cabal of Woke women causing not only the destruction of a leading cancer expert's life but also of the institute itself for the pettiest of motives at MIT is more horrifying than the Jason Arday episode at Cambridge.
Lysenkoism is alive and well and its new name is Wokism. The immense prestige of the Ivy League, Oxbridge and les grand ecoles attract not only the tall trees, but growing in its shadow, also the malignant creepers of envy, deceit and greed.
All those who exclaim "trust the science!" must never forget the scientists are fallible humans who work in institutions from whom ambition and folly have not been banished. The hunger for power is the Satan in the search for truth and it will lead us astray should we not consciously at whiles renew our glance at the light.

Wil Wheaton is engagement-whoring, yes. But this brings to mind (yet again) that neither artists nor fans of the art have control over who finds the art meaningful, enjoyable, worthy of praise (or criticism) and so forth. Once you put something into the world creatively, it kinda becomes its own thing.
And it's not that uncommon for the person making the art to have no idea why the art has taken root in the souls of other people. Certainly Gene Roddenberry didn't understand his own creation.
And I have no doubt even if what Wheaton says is true—and isn't it convenient to put a political shout in the mouth of a dead man?—Stewart didn't understand why anyone Right-of-center would enjoy Next Generation, or his portrayal of Picard.

A lot of us were very willing to have a debate without heat, @stonewalluk, and the reason that never happened wasn't because gender critical feminists didn't want one.
While we were trying to get you to listen to our concerns, your former CEO was telling a BBC boss that gay people not wanting to include the opposite sex in their dating pool was 'sexual racism'. While we were pointing out the homophobia inherent in gender ideology, Stonewall ambassador Alex Drummond (a bearded, heterosexual man who'd had no surgery and taken no cross-sex hormones but liked wearing skirts), was going into schools to talk to students about his 'lesbian' identity. @BluskyeAllison, who actually is a lesbian, was subject to unlawful discrimination at her place of work for tweeting: ‘Stonewall recently hired Morgan Page, a male bodied person who ran workshops with the sole aim of coaching heterosexual men who identify as lesbians on how they can coerce young lesbians into having sex with them. Page called [it] “overcoming the cotton ceiling”.’
When the UK Supreme Court upheld women's right to single sex spaces, you issued a statement expressing your unhappiness about the ruling. In her report on your unhappy influence at the University of Essex, you were found by barrister @akuareindorf to have misrepresented the law as it related to women's rights: '[Stonewall have] stated the law as Stonewall would prefer it to be, rather than the law as it is’.
In 2018, you publicly advised schools to shred a research pack saying there were risks to puberty blockers, in spite of the fact that you aren't a medical charity and that there was already credible evidence that puberty blockers are neither irreversible nor harm-free. Meanwhile you produced your own educational packs, recommending a children's book, for ages 5-9, in which the parent 'is neither a man, nor a woman – they’re non-binary.' In July 2022, Stonewall sent out a tweet that read ‘Research suggests that children as young as two recognise their trans identity'.
@thetimes has reported how you've sought to control the language used by NHS trusts and government on their social-media accounts. Organisations would get points from you for replacing commonly understood words with ideologically approved terms, eg, 'birthing parent' instead of 'mother'. thetimes.com/uk/society/arti…
In short, you took a maximalist position on gender identity ideology, which you attempted to enforce by diktat. You refused to acknowledge that you'd hitched your wagon to a cause that, unlike civil rights, gay rights or women's rights, sought to strip rights from others. You sought to curtail everyone's right to freedom of speech and belief by controlling what it was permissible to think and say, through the management and political class. You have argued against women's and girl's rights to their own spaces, their sports and to assemble without men. Your former CEO tried to shame gay women/men into dating the opposite sex if the latter claimed to be female/male.
Your mantra was 'no debate' because, like all totalitarians, you preferred slogans, bullying and infiltration of powerful institutions to talking to opponents. You appear to have had no concern for the lowly people your ideology was harming: gender confused kids, female rape victims, female prisoners, regular people hounded and investigated at their places of work for refusing to accept the new mandates on sex and gender issued from on high.
Your 'activism' has been a disaster for those trans-identified people who really do just want to get on with their lives in peace. You have besmirched the name of an organisation many of us were once proud to donate to, the charity that was partly responsible for securing the legal right of gay people to marry, which a lot of us thought would never happen in our lifetimes. The milquetoast words quoted below do not erase a decade of gender activism that has been disastrous not only for individuals but for society as a whole.
There was once a debate to be had, but until you acknowledge the direct harm you've caused, it is no more possible to debate you than to persuade a person in the throes of a drug-induced psychosis that they are not, in fact, the reincarnated Christ.

The oceans - not human industrial activity - are the regulatory engine that maintains global climate stability.
Earth, by all physical metrics, should be renamed Ocean. We inhabit an ocean world where deep waters cover 72% of the globe to an average depth of 2.3 miles. Land comprises a mere 28% of the planet's surface, and all human infrastructure combined occupies just 1% to 3% of that remaining land.
Crucially, the oceans hold 86% of the surface carbon reservoir and absorb over 90% of retained thermal energy, while the atmosphere holds just a fraction of a percent of each.
Because of this vast oceanic thermal capacity, Earth’s climate is buffered within longer-term geological regimes. Currently, our planet remains bound to the Late Cenozoic Ice Age, with an average global temperature of roughly 15°C. This is well below (at least 10°C lower) the long-term planetary average of 24°C seen throughout most of biological history.
Carbon dioxide was not the primary driver of these macro-level shifts. The current ice age structure began 34 million years ago with the thermal isolation and glaciation of Antarctica, later intensified by the closure of the Isthmus of Panama and orbital Milankovitch cycles.
The modern world emerged during the current 2.58-million-year Quaternary Glaciation. This is a sequence of 100,000-year long glacial cycles, periodically paused by brief, roughly 15,000-year warm interglacials. All human civilisation, agriculture and technological progress has unfolded within the latest of these: the Holocene interglacial, which began 11,700 years ago.
Measuring current conditions against these geological baselines reveals a very different picture than the skewed narrative of a runaway warming crisis. Roughly 10% of Earth's land area remains permanently capped by glacial ice (15 million square kilometers) - nearly a third of its extent during the Last Glacial Maximum peak 20,000 years ago.
The vast majority of this ice resides in Antarctica, the largest and thickest ice sheet on the planet, extending up to 4.8 kilometers deep and holding 90% of global ice volume.
The Earth has a built-in natural stability, which has guided the planet throughout the entire rise of life on land.
