Friends, in just two days, Christians were murdered on two continents.
On Friday, gunmen opened fire on a funeral at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Karak, Jordan, and killed nine people. On Saturday, armed men attacked Orthodox churches and homes in Oromia, Ethiopia, and killed more than forty.
These are not statistics. They are our brothers and sisters, members of the mystical Body of Christ. When Saul set out to destroy the Church, the risen Jesus asked him, “Why are you persecuting me?” The Lord is still being persecuted in these victims of anti-Christian violence.
Christianity is by far the most persecuted religion in the world today. Those of us who worship in comfort have to ask what the deaths of these martyrs demand of us. At the very least, they demand that we pray for them, learn their names, press our leaders to act, and refuse to look away.
The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.

"East Arsi does not need another statement of concern. It needs answers. It needs accountability."
Read #Addis_Standard’s editorial, “Break this chain of attacks”, from June 2026.
***
The most compelling evidence comes from the Patriarch of the Ethiopian #Orthodox Tewahedo Church himself. In responding to the attacks, Abba Mathias did not speak of a one-off incident. He appealed to authorities to “break this chain of attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
A chain. Not an episode.
For years, this publication has reported on recurring killings, displacement, church burnings, property destruction, and targeted attacks in East Arsi. Religious leaders have warned about it. Community members have warned about it. Survivors have warned about it. Yet the violence continues.
The obvious question is: why?
The answer lies in the complete absence of accountability.

It is heartbreaking to witness how the narrative surrounding the killing of Orthodox Christians in Arsi is being twisted, obscuring a much broader and deeply troubling reality.
Ethnic Amharas in Oromia have been subjected to killings, persecution, and displacement regardless of their religious faith. Families have been uprooted from their homes, often in communities where they had lived alongside their neighbors for generations.
The seeds of hatred and ethnic hostility sown against Amharas in Oromia and elsewhere over the past five decades are now bearing their bitter and deadly fruit. What we are witnessing is not an isolated tragedy, nor should it be reduced to a religious conflict. It is part of a longstanding pattern of ethnic persecution that demands recognition, accountability, and justice.
When hatred is cultivated for generations, violence becomes its harvest. And when the truth is deliberately distorted, the victims are betrayed all over again.

The slaughter of Orthodox Christians in Ethiopia’s Oromia region is an outrage.
More than 60 reportedly killed, including children. Homes burned. Families driven from their communities. The Church has warned repeatedly of these attacks, yet the killing continues.
The freedom to worship without fear is fundamental to human dignity. Those responsible must face justice, and the communities still under threat must be protected.
Canada must speak clearly in defence of religious freedom, wherever it is under assault.

Western right-wingers are exploiting the suffering of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians to advance Islamophobic narratives, while Ethiopians are pointing to the government, accusing it of repeatedly failing to protect its citizens despite recurring attacks. Yet their cries fall on deaf ears.
Caught between competing narratives are the victims, whose suffering is overshadowed and whose calls for justice remain unanswered. 💔

Thank you to the Daily Mail for bringing international attention to the horrific massacre of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians in Ethiopia's Oromia region. The reported killing of more than 40 innocent civilians is not an isolated tragedy but part of a deeply disturbing pattern of violence, displacement, and persecution affecting Amhara communities and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. For far too long, the suffering of these communities has received insufficient international attention. Every murdered child, every grieving family, and every destroyed home represents a human tragedy that demands more than expressions of sympathy. It demands independent investigation, accountability, and sustained international scrutiny. I urge the Daily Mail and other international media organizations to continue investigating these atrocities and amplifying the voices of the victims. Silence must never become complicity.

🚨 Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Holy Synod announces that 60 believers were killed in Arsi Zone over the past few days
Source: @MeseretMedia
The Holy Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has announced that 60 Orthodox Christian believers were brutally killed in Arsi Zone, Oromia Region, during attacks on October 20 and 24, 2026.
According to the Holy Synod's statement:
▪️14 believers were killed in Gora Silingo, Angada Kebele, Merti Woreda.
▪️46 believers were killed in Tereta, Chole and Birbo, Shirka Woreda.
▪️20 residential homes belonging to believers were completely burned down.
▪️More than 20 people sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment in hospitals.
Holy Synod condemns the continued massacres of Orthodox Christians
The Holy Synod stated:
"The extremely horrific and appalling massacres, displacement, physical injuries and destruction of property being inflicted upon our innocent Orthodox Christian children in the Arsi Diocese and various parts of our country have continued without interruption and are worsening over time. It is also known that numerous believers have previously been killed in different woredas of the zone."
The Synod explained that its plenary assembly had observed the immense suffering and atrocities inflicted upon the population with profound sorrow.
It emphasized that such acts are entirely unacceptable under the teachings of any religion and violate fundamental human rights.
The statement continued:
"These inhumane acts violate the constitutional rights to freedom of religion and life, contradict religious teachings and the natural principles of humanity, and destroy our national values of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect. Therefore, the Plenary Assembly of the Holy Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church strongly condemns these acts."
Holy Synod calls on authorities to stop the killings and bring perpetrators to justice
The Holy Synod issued an urgent appeal to the relevant authorities, calling on them to publicly condemn the killings and take immediate measures to protect civilians.
The statement declared:
"The Holy Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church strongly urges the responsible authorities to publicly condemn these inhumane acts, uphold the constitutionally guaranteed rights to life and freedom of worship, and bring the perpetrators of these atrocities before the law."
The Synod further called on authorities to uphold the rule of law and provide the necessary legal protection to prevent similar acts of violence from recurring.
It emphasized that the responsible institutions must fulfill their obligations to protect citizens and ensure that such atrocities do not happen again.
Holy Synod demands immediate security protection for Orthodox Christians
Expressing profound grief over the loss of life, the Holy Synod stated:
"We urge the government to provide the necessary protection to our faithful children wherever they may be, so that they do not suffer similar attacks. We also call upon the relevant security institutions to give this matter special attention and take the necessary protective measures until the problem is resolved, working to prevent further dangers."
The Synod extended its condolences to the families of those killed and to all Ethiopians.
It added:
"The Holy Church prays that Almighty God grant eternal rest and the honor of martyrdom to our people who unjustly lost their lives, and provide comfort to the families of the deceased and to all Ethiopians."
Holy Synod announces nationwide and worldwide memorial prayers
The Plenary Assembly of the Holy Synod also adopted several decisions in response to the killings.
1. Memorial prayers on October 26, 2026
The Holy Synod decided that funeral and memorial prayers would be conducted on October 26, 2026 (Tikimt 16, 2019 E.C.), by members of the Plenary Assembly at the Patriarchal See's Holy of Holies St. Mary Monastery.
2. Worldwide memorial prayers on October 27, 2026
The Synod instructed all Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church monasteries and churches throughout the world to conduct funeral and memorial prayers following the Divine Liturgy on October 27, 2026 (Tikimt 17, 2019 E.C.), in remembrance of the victims.
3. Meeting with senior government officials
The Plenary Assembly decided to arrange a meeting with the relevant senior government official to discuss the killings and the security situation affecting Orthodox Christians.
4. Long-term measures to prevent further attacks
The Holy Synod also resolved to pursue appropriate efforts toward a lasting solution to the violence and insecurity affecting Orthodox Christian communities.
The statement concluded by emphasizing the Church's determination to seek protection for its believers, accountability for those responsible for the killings, and lasting measures to prevent further atrocities.

Orthodox Christians in Ethiopia’s Arsi / East Arsi Zone have faced years of targeted violence. EHRCO documented at least 432–458 civilians killed between ~2021 and mid-2026, mainly in districts like Shirka, Merti, and Jeju, with attacks including killings, abductions, home burnings, and assaults on churches.
The pattern continued in 2026. After earlier waves that killed dozens more, the Holy Synod confirmed about 60 Orthodox faithful killed in October attacks in Merti and Shirka alone — including children and the elderly — with homes burned and many displaced. Church and local reports describe repeated failures to protect civilians.
These figures come from EHRCO, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and media reports and are likely undercounts. Independent investigation and effective security for communities are urgently needed. #Ethiopia #Arsi #OrthodoxChristians
