I still haven't mastered parametric coloring in @Desmos. Anyone wanna help?
I'm trying to create a graph that only graphs within a "foggy window" around a given point.

Okay, here's the thing that I was building. This is an idea that I had brewing for introducing the concept of limits. #mtbos #iteachmath

I made this as an exploration of geometric definitions of conics. Comments welcome.

omgosh I just blew my own mind by "extending" the definition of an ellipse to include a 3rd point. I thought I would get something roughly akin to wrapping a string around 3 thumbtacks, but I did not.
btw my desmos graph was influenced by @dpscher's book Exploring Conic Sections with Sketchpad. I appreciate the encouragement to play and explore in the book, and I equally appreciate how easy it is to build (and extend) conic sections using the distance function in Desmos.
Help me #MTBoS, I haven't taught stats in years. Looking for a meaningful data set that I can use in a lesson on linear regression.
any good data set resources?

This poster was hung by a math instructor in one of my classrooms. While I appreciate the quote, I wonder what message the students get from it.

A little piece I wrote for today’s i newspaper about why - I think - you don’t see more girls doing maths.
In short: it’s death by a thousand cuts.

Back on campus for summer classes. A few students zoomed in on the first day because they were Covid+. Now I have students asking to zoom in on a regular basis, for all sorts of reasons. I'm wondering how I feel about this, and whether my feelings can be translated into policy.
First day back on campus: NOTHING WORKED. I tried 4 different printers to print handouts. Nope. I had visuals on my computer as a back-up plan. Ha. My classroom only had a VGA cable and I didn't have an adapter. Eventually I gave my students links to my google drive with the
I think that my students might possibly have worried about my sanity, as I just laughed off every new thing that didn't work.
There may be a perceived fine line between joyful acceptance and stark-raving-madness.
Roughly 8-ish minutes later, I looked at the wall clock and saw that not a minute had gone by. Clock is broken. Eventually I called for a 10-min break and went to the bathroom, and there was a sign that said to try the next building over.
handouts on them, so they used the handouts on their phones. Thanks, @cheesemonkeysf for the Talking Points Harry Potter script. Then I gave them a set of Talking Points on failure/habits of mind/learning and told them I'd give them 10 minutes. I checked the wall clock for time.
