It feels strange, but I’m really grieving Patrick Stewart passing. His friendship with Ian Mckellen is what I grew up seeing and not only helped me accept my queerness, but sought unbreakable friendships. My heart goes out to all those close to him but especially Ian.

Pope Leo XIV bringing the jokes meeting with Villanova and Notre Dame 😂: “Growing up on the south side of Chicago, we oftentimes heard, “Go Irish!” But, as you all know, Prevost graduated from Villanova. So the Pope doesn't take sides. Prevost has another opinion, but we won't do that now.”

yet the worst part of the video is actually that you cannot tell the officer to go fuck themselves bc that‘s also legally punishable and not protected as free speech.
In Germany you can lose your driving license without ever touching a car 🤡

I've long said the best way to tell if someone has ADHD or genuine lateness problem or whether it's just indifference to others is whether it happens when they are the primary one being inconvenienced.
Replying to @lizisamused
I think a lot of it is that they don't see it when it's not inconveniencing others, so they see it as someone that is used to explain inconvenience to others instead of the thing that hurts the person who has it.

I met the man once. After having lunch with Michael Piller at Paramount, he walked me over to tour the sets for “Deep Space Nine” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” the latter of which was in production. I overheard an AD say Patrick Stewart had wrapped earlier, so I was surprised to see him still there. Michael explained that Stewart made it a point to read off-camera lines for his fellow cast members, including, in this particular case, a guest star. We were introduced, and I found Stewart’s demeanor to be a mix of commanding and casual. After complimenting him on his performances as Sejanus in “I, Claudius” and Lenin in “Fall of Eagles,” his posture noticeably changed. In fact, the director of the episode began ribbing him about how he was now “standing up straighter,” as Stewart wryly remarked in that sonorous voice: “There are a few of your kind that know my work from before.” When I tried to compliment him for hanging around for another performer’s coverage, he told me the story how, on his very first film, Rod Steiger insisted on doing the same for him, overriding a harried director who wanted the script supervisor to dispassionately read the dialogue so the scene could be banged out more quickly. We chatted for a few minutes about Shakespeare and mutual acquaintances before he returned to the scene underway. All the cast members from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” I’ve interacted with have been delightful and gracious. It seemed to be a harmonious ensemble in which they had cast not only the right actors for each role, but the right people. It started with the captain. 🎭

We might just get the bubble pop + everything breaks ending.
BREAKING: Anthropic is now expected to receive a "high junk" rating from major credit rating agencies after its IPO, which could come as soon as November, per FT. Details include: 1. Blackstone has told investors that Anthropic likely will not receive an investment-grade rating immediately after its IPO 2. Blackstone is working with banks that stumped up financing on selling the debt on to other investors 3. An investment-grade rating is "central" to Anthropic's ability to continue its AI buildout 4. The company says it expects to spend over $800 billion on computing infrastructure between now and 2045 Debt markets are increasingly in the spotlight as AI funding becomes less abundant.

Your computer will be some kind of dumb terminal incapable of running anything more demanding than Notepad, and you'll need to connect to a data centre to get anything done under this glorious future envisaged by the tech bros.
BREAKING: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says having RAM in personal computers is an inefficient use of the world’s limited DRAM supply, arguing it would be better allocated to data centers, per Tom’s Hardware

Ok, story time. On Father's Day 2016 I was out to brunch with a friend in Park Slope and I brought my then new puppy Stevie Nicks. Midway through the meal a young woman and an older man were seated next to us. He was wearing a bucket hat and sunglasses. After a few minutes they both start asking me questions about my dog, then start petting her, then start playing with her, then ask if we can combine tables. Thought it was kind of forward but whatever. We talk a bunch about pet ownership and about how bad they both want a dog but can't due to work travel. In fact, they had just gotten back from a business trip. I tell them they should just do it. It was all very pleasant. Throughout the meal the man didn't look up much and when he spoke it was mostly in hushed tones. Just thought he was shy or quiet, or maybe sick. Its New York so you encounter weird stuff all the time. Until, for just a brief moment, his voice broke out in excitement. I looked at my friend a bit puzzled, he looked back at me. The voice was unmistakeable. It was in that moment that we both realized we were having brunch with SIR PATRICK STEWART. He could tell he was outted. But we played it cool, he played it cool, we all ate together and then went our separate ways. I later realized the "business travel" he had just come back from was filming Logan. I often forget about the encounter but a few years later there were a bunch of pieces that were written about him and his wife and their love of fostering pitbulls and it made me happy. Can't help but feel like my encouragement played a small, small part in their decision to do so. Anyway, rest easy Sir Patrick Stewart. My dad was the biggest Next Generation fan and I'll always treasure how Captain Picard loved my dog.

Machines are tools, not persons. Today, some propose granting these systems rights, or even legal personhood. Such an approach risks obscuring human responsibility and leaving those who suffer harm to confront a faceless entity.

The idea of people from a working class background and real deprivation being cultivated to the very heights of grace and culture like Patrick Stewart was a great achievement of the 20th century, and almost lost now in many places. The Anglosphere ruling classes did everything they could to stop this and replace it with a global neo-caste system of bloodless strivers and nepo babies.
my tiny contribution to patrick stewart discourse is i read the beginning of his memoir in a bookstore (which is good and afaict was not ghostwritten) and he talks about how he grew up in a working-class english town so poor it didn't even have running water or something, and there's something poetic about someone who grew up like that becoming the, y'know, captain of a starship amazon.com/clp/1982167734?lv…
