funny how you almost always HAVE to be a scientist by background to run a scientific r&d org
whereas in the arts you can be an appreciator of art and never have practiced as an artist to run an art r&d org

I have very exciting news. Thanks to a generous gift from @patrickc, the Cræft Prize is growing to £110,000.
My March open call for artisan-innovators fusing the wisdom of craft with cutting-edge technology sparked a flood of excellent submissions.
In early 2027, we will host an awards ceremony, exhibition, and conference exploring how craft can breathe soul and beauty into the machine.

Very grateful to see this project by @frogspitsimulat come to life and this question from @proofofgail - feels more prescient than ever and what is written in this article by Nick is almost foretold by explorations that Nakamura has done along with many other researchers
interpretability might be the most important scientific problem in the world right now, as I don't think we can solve alignment if we don't know what we're building. I think I have good news about it. I co-authored early work in mechanistic interpretability at OpenAI and came away pessimistic, because neural networks appeared to fold into arbitrary tangled knots. years later, I started openai's first large-scale automated interpretability project, finding about 2% of neurons legible with the primitive tools we had
with modern agentic tools and a much closer look, the picture looks totally different. the vast majority in models up to trillions of parameters are legible, and their circuits beautiful. many famous examples of tangled neurons turned out to be misunderstood. The roadblocks I expected mostly aren't there. I now think ambitious interpretability will be solved by the time we need it most, and possibly quite soon, as automated scientists keep improving. it may be a bitter lesson for interpretability: the simple thing, at absurd scale, works

The exhibit runs until May 2027, and highlights the work of Vera Molnár alongside several contemporary artists.
Pictured below, works by @REAS @williamapan @zachlieberman @Licia_He, alongside Vera’s.

Just spotting on social media but my work is up now at the V&A at a show about Vera Molnar. I teach her work every year and it’s the first lecture I give since it opens students minds to generative art. I’m beyond honored

Every artist who has ever sat behind a screen wondering if their pixels, code, or digital canvasses held the same weight as paint and stone—this is the answer.
This moment isn’t just a personal triumph for the late @vera_molnar_official ; it’s a seismic shift. Congrats @V_and_A

psa that if there’s a museum you visit every few months and that you bring guests to, you should just buy the membership. most pay for themselves in 2-3 visits and include guest admission and special exhibit access

Question for Twitter: What are the initiatives (corporate or non-profit) either within or adjacent to the tech world that are meaningfully funding projects in arts and culture?

Bonjour 👋
I’ve been working on something new following a visit to the @V_and_A with @mattdesl.
We were introduced to the museum's collection by the curators, and I found myself thinking about how artists have used computation to explore form, colour and space.
Those conversations became the starting point for a new work, created with @avant_arte for the V&A's Digital Art Season and the upcoming Vera Molnar exhibition.
Also, biggest kudos to @proofofgail ♥️
