What if I told you a relative of mine works on Parliament Hill as a government staffer? And, what if I told you she says she was privy to discussions among government MPs and their staff about phasing out a couple benefits Canadians depend on in order to fund other programs related to immigration and EU obligations? Support promoted publicly while, according to her account, phasing it out between 2028 to 2030 was discussed privately. I cannot independently verify her account or substantiate that timeline. This is an allegation about discussions, not evidence of an approved plan. "What if" doesn't change that. But what if the private conversation is very much an action plan being kept from the public sales pitch? Would anyone even be surprised? Liberals have tanked our economy, food inflation is dangerously high, Liberal borrowing and spending is out of control and escalating all while the Liberal government finally understands that there is only one taxpayer, we are out of money and soon our national credit card will be cut up. Don't forget: Carnwy wants us to be a member of the EU in some manner or other. There is a monetary cost to it. Ursula is already declaring that the people in the member EU nations have too much money in their savings doung nothing and is working out a way to get her hands on it. How long before Carney offers up taxpayer money to grease the way for his membership goal? "Oh don't worry Ursula... we're phasing out some of the biggest benefits Canadians rely on, so I'll have an extra 30 billion lying around. Now... about that membership..." Look at the position Canadians are in. We work. We pay taxes. We still need a government cheque to cover groceries. Some people have to lose paid working hours just to stand in a food-bank line. I know this because I used to do it. I still would be if I was working in the same area as the foodbank over 70 km away. Lose wages to collect food you can't afford because your wages aren't enough. Explain how the hell that adds up.🤷🏼‍♀️ What if Ottawa encourages you to count on those payments? What if you build your household budget around them? And what if you later discover that phasing them out was being discussed while you were being told how much the government was helping? Would that change how you see the people leading this country or would you still place what little faith you have left in our government and hope to hell you don't get the rug pulled out from under you? A taxpayer funded CBC headline saying the economy is improving doesn't pay your rent, and it doesn’t mean your wages suddenly cover the groceries. A recovery has to reach your kitchen table before anyone gets to tell you you're doing fine. And what happens politically when people become afraid of losing the payments keeping them afloat? What if keeping that cheque starts to feel like the only reason to keep the government? That's a hell of a position to put working people in. You don't make people independent by leaving them just as broke and cancelling the fucking cheque with a smileand speech about dangerous divided times! So be forewarned.... what if Ottawa keeps millions of Canadians counting on the next payment, then rapidly phases it out before they can afford to live without it? What happens to people already skipping meals and juggling overdue bills? Their expenses don’t disappear with the cheque. Their options do. And when large numbers of people are pushed further into desperation, the risks of crime and homelessness grow. Desperation isn't a crime, but it sure as hell isn't a housing policy either. "End homelessness in ten years" is what this budget promises. How marvelous. Sounds like it survived every focus group and never met a grocery bill. If you phase out support while people still need it to afford rent and food, you put those barely scraping by at greater risk of losing their homes. That's how you risk making homelessness worse while congratulating yourself for promising to fix it. You don't get to promise fewer people living on the street while pulling support from people already one missed payment away from joining them.
