So you wake up in the morning, your alarm is several minutes late; it’s no matter that you hit the snooze button more than once, the fact is that you just woke up and you are running late. You rush 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️through your morning routine and make your way to work,

Today the Order of Preachers joyfully celebrates the feast of St. Martin de Porres! Saint Martin de Porres was born in 1579 as the illegitimate son of a Spanish nobleman and a freed slave. He grew up in poverty, but when his father officially recognized him as his son, he was trained as a barber-surgeon. He faced a great deal of ridicule for being of mixed race, but Saint Martin was known for his patience in the face of insults. Because the law of Peru at the time banned Saint Martin from becoming a full member of a religious order on account of his race, he humbly accepted a lay position helping out at a Dominican priory. Later he was offered the habit as a cooperator brother despite the law against doing so and despite his initial refusal due to humility. As a Dominican friar he attended to the sick within the infirmary of the priory. Cooperator brothers, like their priestly counterparts, make vows that consecrate them to God. Through God’s grace, Saint Martin perfected that consecration over his lifetime by embracing the wood of the broom and the wood of the cross. Although early in life he wanted to go to a mission territory and die a glorious martyr’s death, he instead poured himself into prayer and penance to bring himself closer into the love of God. That divine love then poured over into his help of the poor and the sick. In light of this, the depictions of Saint Martin clutching the crucifix to his heart represents his conformity to Jesus Christ through prayer and penance, while the broom represents the service he offered that flowed from his union with God. Saint Martin’s hands were no strangers to the rough grain of the wood present in both these instruments. Saint Martin’s crucifix and broom were types of the tree of life, that is, the cross of Jesus Christ. Through Saint Martin’s powerful intercession, we can pray that the love of God can continually spill over into all of our service to others for years to come. —Br. Martin Davis, O.P.

The Pope’s Prayer intention for the month of November is to pray for a just use of wealth: “Lord of Life, ll we have comes from you. The fertile land, the talents we've received, the effort of those who came before us. Nothing is ours alone. Everything is a shared gift. But so often, Lord, we let the wealth we seek or attain harden our hearts, lock us in selfishness, make us forget the most vulnerable. Forgive us for storing up instead of sharing, for using goods as power, rather than as service. You remind us that true wealth is not found in what we keep, but in what we give to love, a heart detached from possessions, transforms the world. It opens paths of justice, tears down walls of indifference, and sows hope among the poor. We ask you, Lord, that your Spirit teach us to use what we have, money, time, talents, opportunities, as instruments of fraternity. They each economic, family, or community decision spring from a free heart, able to recognise that every good is meant for all. And that only by sharing we build the future. Make us witnesses of a wealth transformed into service and mercy. So that our lives, united to the lives of others, may be a sign of your kingdom, of justice and peace. Amen.”

Today is the Feast of St. Martin de Porres, a Dominican friar from Peru. Among the many miracles attributed to him were those of levitation, bilocation, miraculous knowledge, and instantaneous cures. Patron Saint of mixed-race people and race relations. Ora pro nobis

Speaking of the Eucharist, it’s the best gift we have. No other god offers this level of intimacy with His people.

Long before modern public healthcare existed, St. Martin de Porres established Lima’s first comprehensive social safety net. Apprenticed as a barber-surgeon in his youth, Martin turned his monastery cell into a 24/7 free clinic. In 17th-century Peru's rigid social caste system, he treated everyone with identical dignity: - Spanish elites & government officials - Enslaved Africans & Indigenous laborers - Abandoned street orphans When the monastery fell into heavy debt, Martin offered to be sold into slavery to pay off what the friars owed, telling his Superior: "I am only a poor mulatto. Sell me." (The Superior broke down in tears and refused). He didn't just preach the Gospel; he lived it at radical personal cost.
