The iconic photograph, captured in Michigan in 1936, depicts a "penny auction" during the Great Depression. Rural neighbors gathered at foreclosed farms, used intimidation or displayed nooses to block outside bidders, bought back land and equipment for mere pennies, and returned everything to the displaced family.... In the early 1930s, American farmers were in crisis. Crop prices collapsed, droughts hit parts of the country, and many families couldn’t keep up with their mortgages. Banks and lenders foreclosed on thousands of farms and auctioned off land, equipment and livestock to recover their money. Penny auctions became a form of protest. They spread across the Midwest in 1932 and 1933, especially in states like Iowa and Nebraska. Bids could be laughably low, sometimes a nickel for a tractor or a few cents for a cow. Not every penny auction involved a whole farm. Many saved a family’s tools and animals so they could keep working. Groups like the Farmers’ Holiday Association helped organize the resistance, and the pressure worked. Several states passed temporary bans on foreclosures, and in 1934, Congress passed a law to help struggling farmers keep their land. In April 1933, angry farmers in Le Mars, Iowa, dragged a judge from his courtroom and put a noose around his neck to pressure him to stop signing foreclosures. The governor responded by declaring martial law in the county. #archaeohistories

California hasn't built its bullet train because the state has required 130,000 pages of environmental reports, making absurd demands like: • counting bumblebees one by one • rebuilding woodrat stick huts • hiring specialized dogs to sniff lizard scat

🧵Ukraine just won its biggest offensive of the year by keeping it a secret from its own army. Commander Biletskyi banned his officers from logging their advance on their battlefield app because it leaked. 1/🧵

#NationalSecurity for America China operates on a multi-level basis in Canada: -corporate espionage -illegal #banking -covert #police -nefarious #investments -predatory practice in #engineering & #technology Canada is a threat, @robert_spalding cc @alberta_cw @GarnettGenuis
This is exactly what the Chinese Communists have been working towards. If you believe communism died with the Soviet Union, you’re wrong. In China, it evolved. It painted itself to look like the West. Now it owns the international institutions, and is working towards owning our domestic institutions.

Continuing to support /defend Jason Kenney will be the end of us, @RonVoss5 He's a fat little snitch who was nothing more than a spy for the Liberals. As some point, we're judged by the company we keep. @alberta_cw @Drew__Barnes @DanWilliamsAB @JodyDahrouge #AlbertaReferendum
Throw Out the Separatists?   Columnist Rick Bell, who I regard as Danielle Smith’s personal stenographer, got together with her for a chat and wrote a piece, “Danielle Smith’s message for Alberta separatists on eve of the referendum”, to help her get her message out as to what she wants “to say to the separatists if they do not win in the referendum vote”, and, in particular, to those who are part of the UCP’s members base.   In that article a video of a segment of his chat with Danielle Smith was provided wherein she cites what she declares to be a principle of the party, a “Loyalty to a united Canada”, and that she, accordingly, expects those UCP members supporting Alberta independence to fall into line. She also pointed out that she regards that supposed principle as being so important that it “has been (her) guiding principle” and what she “campaigned on”. To make her message to the members more forceful, her personal stenographer decided to include a clip of Jason Kenney declaring that “the UCP needs to lay down the law” that if members don’t go along with that “core principle…to support a united Canada”, then they “should go somewhere else”.   The big problem with all this talk about a supposed “Loyalty to a united Canada” principle having been adopted at the UCP’s Founding General Meeting, is that, like much that we hear from the Premier, it’s a big, fat LIE. xitter.cf/ronvoss5/status/211168…

We needed professional writers & media experts like @lamphieryeg Come on, #AlbertaIndependence cc @JeffreyRWRath @ikwilson @echipiuk @vanhuigenbos_m @YakkStack @SheilaGunnReid
I hear ya. But this was a preliminary, grassroots, multi-pronged, citizen-led initiative. Not the main event (a binding referendum) itself, Hardly surprising it was often messy and confusing.

This can be quickly rectified by going after the Commercial Transport police ... possibly by way of a Writ of Mandamus. @AlbertaSheriffs are clearly discriminating against #truckers who are not Asian. @MikeEllisUCP, you have the mic @DarrenBurchill @kpac_15 #AlbertaReferendum
If only they were just retarded. The fact that the gov allows these cretins to pilot an 80 to 140 thousand pound murder machine is criminal.

Life is really confusing for the #NDP in Alberta ... @DarrenBurchill thx for those "words of inspiration from Nenshi" #AlbertaReferendum
The UCP has bungled the referendum vote. More than 250,000 Albertans signed up to vote by Special Ballot. Now, confusing and incorrect forms are landing in voters’ mailboxes, threatening fines and even imprisonment. How did this happen, and what does it mean for your vote? That's the same thing John Adams said until the men & horses arrived from Virginia. Think like George Washington, my friend. Forge ahead! @lamphieryeg @kpac_15 @GregMcLeanYYC @artcgreen #AlbertaReferendum
All I was hoping for was an honest, open debate about the pros and cons of separation. But that was never gonna happen. The remain side traded in fear and emotion. The separatists (except Keith Wilson) oversimplified everything.

Alberta's greatest oncologist is @MakisMedicine He was persecuted by @Albertadoctors @UAlberta @UCPCaucus & Jason Kenney (of course, the #Liberals moved in like flies) #medicine #doctors #HealthcareInnovation #healthcare #cancer #technology #wainwright #CFB
Covid gave us a glimpse of totalitarianism in America. It is not hard to create a climate of fear and intimidation. Most people just played along. Only a few called it what it was.

Excellent, @RonVoss5 None of #NDP & #Liberal propaganda focuses on #families or #children: -only #unions -crappy infill housing -bachelor suites @UAlberta refuses to consider #AffordableHousing for students by obstructing @UAlbertaAlumni & #fraternity houses @yegwave #yegcc
The future, the future of our children and grandchildren is too precious to go along with Carney and Smith’s games.

Excellent reply, @kpac_15 No fault #insurance works in: -no win, declining economy -no one works except for govt The fundamental premise: no individual should make profits, no businesses should succeed Trevor Tombe assumed these points #AlbertaIndependence @JeffreyRWRath
My workers were rear ended in a welding rig in Richmond. A BMW 3 series driving 70 km/h rammed into the back of an F-350 heavy duty stopped at a red light. Put the welding machine and and skid through the back window. We couldn’t collect for lost time for the workers, it took 5 weeks to get a quote to fix it and 3 more months for repairs. Insurance wouldn’t even cover for a month for rental truck to keep the crews going. Take your no fault insurance and shove it up your ass.

Obviously, @JimMcMurtry01, you need to initiate a WRIT OF MANDAMUS against the school board trustees who are failing to guarantee #FreedomOfSpeech Intimidation of students & teachers cannot remain in practice. @AaronGunn @AndrewScheer @StephanieKusie @JohnBarlowMP @brianlilley
Simple questions • Should students be scared to speak up at school? • Should they be suspended when they do? • Should school boards like @sd43bc be disbanded?

Trevor makes assumptions like all economists: -only #RCMP allowed -deference to Toronto #banking -no seizure of FED GOVT ASSETS -cannot rewrite #insurance -1000s of Fed Govt workers could never be laid off @lamphieryeg, Tombe's econ model = naivete @JeffreyRWRath @alberta_cw
