Though lengthy, this Youtube discussion is one of the best I've heard on fertility challenges and research for corn. And while targeted to Iowa and Illinois, it's just as applicable for elsewhere, including Ontario. Thanks, @ajmargenot and @castellmj .

The cyclospora outbreak caused by imported lettuce is devastating our California produce industry, and many Americans are not eating the healthy foods they need. California grown produce is safe!
California lettuce was not implicated in a sprawling cyclospora outbreak that sickened thousands of people and made frequent headlines this summer.
But farmers in the state—who produce most of the country’s lettuce—are shouldering much of the economic pain as wary consumers ditch lettuce and other fresh produce. Last month, lettuce prices declined 16.4%, the largest month-over-month drop on record, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Meanwhile, market research firm NielsenIQ reported that from July 18 to Aug. 8, sales of iceberg lettuce fell 25.4% and prepacked salads dipped 34.2%.
Growers said they were left with little choice but to destroy about a third of their lettuce crops that were ready to harvest. “It’s been really bad,” said Ryan Kelly, vice president and general manager of Salinas-based Boutonnet Farms in Monterey County. Since mid-July, he said, the collapse in lettuce sales had erased the farm’s entire profit margin for the year.

Can confirm: even “top” university students are often not *actually* prepared. When I was teaching soil nutrient management to Jrs and Srs in college, I spent as much time teaching fractions as I did fertilizer usage. They weren’t incapable, they were just underprepared.

Received word this week that Iowa NASS and other states have discontinued their 2026 weekly crop progress reports. No more district planting, soil moisture, or district harvest estimates.
We’ve used this district data for the past 25 years for many purposes and it’s quite disappointing that as technology advances, the information flow back to the farmer and grain industry has gone backwards.

The spectacular reduction of farm land needed per person is a statistic everyone should be taught at school. It is also a tribute to scientific progress, innovation by farmers, national & international policies, esp trade. The next step: increase natural resource area per person

Something I heard recently from Stewart Wuest, USDA-ARS: Tillage effects on the soil are dose dependent. More passes, higher intensity tillage means more effects. It's not "till or no-till?" but "how much?"

With plenty of N, corn after rye cover crops yields just fine
New in A&EL: A 12-site-year study from Alexandra Huddell and colleagues challenges assumptions about corn yield after cereal rye.
Interestingly, the total N rate mattered more than timing, and when N was sufficient, rye biomass rarely reduced yield.
Read: doi.org/10.1002/ael2.70041

ALT Corn yield (kg/ha) by cereal rye biomass level with no nitrogen (N) fertilizer applied (a) versus the high N rate (b) and different levels of cereal rye biomass (kg/ha) (divided into quintiles). Corn yield penalties were observed in high cereal rye biomass levels with no N added. When sufficient N was applied, corn yield penalties occurred only for mid rye biomass levels but otherwise did not.

I'm sorry folks, but we have to stop claiming Improved Nutrient use efficiencies on products, specifically biological and sugar based, that mineralize OM. Just say your product burns through the OM, its not magic, its science. I feel the need to pour something and write a blog.
