Great advice @commaficionado @AMASEdin chat yesterday. "Let #ActuallyAutistic CYP play, access to passions/interests 1st/alongside, NOT as reward, but as support." No cost to school. Instead, Acceptance, Belonging, Connection @drchrisjbailey @thewoodbug @JoPavlopoulou @MrTs_NQTs
16/24 #AutisticPlay Play may look different for #autistic children & adults. All play is ok! #Play brings joy, a way of learning in an enjoyable meaningful way & also supports sensory regulation. Lots of great info here from Kerry Murphy @Tapestry_FSF padlet.com/spectrumgaming/ep…

I’d like to work towards becoming a university lecturer in Critical Autism Studies post-MA study. I’m also interested in curriculum development as a means of embedding intersectional perspectives of Autism into academia. Does anybody know how I can go about achieving this?

Slightly late to my own party, but I'm really excited to share that my first ever first-author paper is out now! 😁 We validated the participatory design process that went into developing the #LEANSproject - a neurodiversity teaching programme for primary schools 👇 (1/8)

An excellent article. Despite 5 decades of failing, a poor quality and light weight evidence base, and human rights and disabled people's organisations not supporting them, behaviourist approaches continue to be promoted to to deal with disabled people's behaviours.

Meanwhile in Scotland Scottish Greens vote to ban ABA PBS, practices supported by @ScotGov, but considered “conversion therapy” for disabled people, lacking in evidence and which experts say go against human rights. #PBSFails #ABAharms #BanABA

We were asked ABA by a parent recently. I sent them this article. ABA& PBS is firmly placed within colonial mentality. It's an unfortunate residue that exists in colonised communities. The article refers to #StoptheShock. Why do ABA/PBS still have support? Thanks Fergus ♾️

Ta, Catherine. These are my 4 books if anyone is interested in grabbing one for Xmas. All ND heroines, all happy ever afters and all written with story first, and authentic rep. I've come a long way from "It's a nice idea but those kinds of books won't work" They've done ok.
Guest Twitter post from Catherine. " I love all @BooksandChokers books and I honestly can't decide which one is better. I love how they give a voice to autistic people in a wonderful story that is engaging and fun. I can't wait to read what Elle's doing next! " #PerfectPresent

As an autistic person I've leaned to 'perform' to conform and that includes having to 'perform' my gender so as to help make other people more comfortable. That is what forcing gender conformance on autistic children is. Giving us one more thing we have to do to make you feel OK.

On a related point we were advised to get couples counselling after my autism diagnosis. Local Relate counsellors hadn’t done any autism training. Checked recently - still haven’t. And therapists who are “experienced in working with autistic people” may not be autism affirmative.
Adult social care should have a positive role in supporting autistic individuals with love and relationships - @monique_huy talks about SAAIL project at #SWR2023. Policy documents fail to recognise love and relationships and health and social care need to incorporate this focus

The motion passed at this weekend's @scottishgreens conference correctly cites UNCRPD principles of autonomy, dignity, and the right to freedom from non-consensual or degrading treatment as grounds for a comprehensive ban on behaviour modification practices, naming #ABA and #PBS

Replying to @fussireland
@fussireland @DisabilityFed @AnneRabbitte @AsIAmIreland Great to see ABA/PBS recognised as the harmful degrading intervention that it is. Our disability matters committee have already stated it goes against human rights; when are we going to remove it from services?

👏👏👏It is admirable to see that @LornaSlater, @PatrickHarvie, and @scottishgreens are actively engaging with the disability community rather than solely relying on individuals who have "claimed" to represent them for a considerable period. It is crucial for Scotland to follow Ireland's example and acknowledge that PBS/ABA and behaviorism approaches are inconsistent with the UNCRPD. Congratulations to all involved in this initiative for ensuring that individuals with disabilities have a platform to express their concerns, despite the significant dismissal and denial from those who refuse to recognize the harm they are causing and insist on implementing these practices against a community that desires its elimination.

It is often hard for me to switch tasks. Especially when I get into a hyperfocus state. 🧘 I've always struggled to explain to others why it is so difficult. 🤔 “Tendril theory" by Erin Human explains it really well. image: @theeisforerin
